Mezzanine I-Pack, founded in December 2008, is a social enterprise to support sae to min, with a support from the government, foundation, and corporations. The main product is paper box which is used to pack wine, cosmetics and such. It employees approximately 30 sae to min, and reported 2,130 million Korean won of sales in 2009. The major employees of Mezzanine I-Pack are sae to min, people from vulnerable bracket, and women in their 40s and 50s. It obtained certification of social enterprise from Ministry of Employment & Labor in 2009.
Established in Paju, Gyeonggi province in March 2009, Mezzanine Ecowon benchmarked and applied business model of Mezzanine I-Pack. Ecowon produces and sells roll screen, wood blind and such. It was also certificated as a social enterprise for its employment of 20 sae to min.
Established with a mission to enhance domestic fashion industry’s competitiveness and to boost the employment of the socially underprivileged, Grateful Hands is a social contribution corporate (Ministry for Health and Wealfare) which manufactures and sells fashion accessories. It was founded in June 2009, and it contributes 50% of the corporate profits to society.
Pyongyang art troupe comprises of professional artists who performed in North Korea. Under the strong sponsorship and cooperation from Arts Council Korea and Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, Pyongyang Art Troupe is performing at various local festivals and concerts.
Established by POSCO, Songdo SE provides cleaning and parking management services to POSCO and related corporations. It received social enterprise certification in 2010 from Ministry of Employment and Labor. Songdo SE currently hires approximately 100 employees from socially vulnerable class, including 35 sae to min (in year 2010).
Bliss&Bless is a café located in Myungdong, Seoul. You can taste good taste coffee served by educated teenage baristas who came from North Korea. Considering the fact that majority of sae to min were absorbed in repetitive manual job markets, Bliss&Bless has its distinctive characteristic as a service oriented corporate. It was certified as a social enterprise in May, 2009.
Run by Center for North Korean Defectors in Gwang-ju, Jeollanam-do, this corporation aims to provide stable jobs to sae to min. As a wood furniture manufacturer, it educates 17 employees with furniture production, design, sales and such. When the education is finished, they are scheduled to embark on the furniture production. Although it does not have its own store yet, it is expected to build its own factories and stores as soon as the commissioned education is completed.
Ryu-Kyung-ok is a traditional North Korean food restaurant. You will have a precious chance to try North Korea’s ancestral rites food, and you might also take a glimpse of ordinary North Korean people’s life. For sae to min themselves, they often visit here to soothe their homesick.
